All Starfield Companions And How To Recruit Them

You don’t have to find a Starfield companion, but there are Starfield traits that offer additional bonuses for having a companion and staying in their good books, as well as being a vital part of your Starfield crew. Companions often provide an alternate point of view during Starfield missions, and they aren’t shy about commenting on the decisions you’ve chosen – so prepare to be judged for any morally questionable actions. It also goes without saying that they’re also a prerequisite for a Starfield romance. Here’s the scoop on companions in Starfield, along with their character Starfield backgrounds and skills.

Starfield companions list

There are over 20 Starfield companions available to recruit, and each of them have different recruitment requirements. However, all of them have specific skills that can help you as you explore. Here are all the Starfield companions, their skills, and how to recruit them:

Best Starfield companions

Choosing the best Starfield companion is a tall order. A companion doesn’t just remain on the ship with the rest of your crew – they’re also traveling alongside you, carrying your excess items and offering their input when required. Thankfully, we’re here to narrow this list down and present the very best options available.
The best Starfield companions are:

Barrett Sam Coe Sarah Morgan Adoring Fan Heller Vasco

Barrett

While many of the people you meet in Starfield are undoubtedly foes, Starfield Barrett is a reassuringly friendly face. His skills in Starship Engineering and Particle Beam Weapon Systems (alright, show off) will no doubt come in handy on your expeditions. The New Atlantis resident also appears on the official Starfield story and timeline as the one to discover the Artifact in the Constellation’s archives, as well as the mastermind behind The Eye.

Sam Coe

As your resident space cowboy, Sam Coe’s traded in a horse for a Starfield ship. He’s a confident pilot, which bodes well for Starfield space combat situations – especially if you fall afoul of the piratical Crimson Fleet. Sam is a descent from the late Solomon Coe, the founder of the Freestar Collective and Akila City, and we expect that legacy weighs heavy on Sam’s shoulders. We also know he has a daughter, Cora, so be prepared to have her tag along with you.

Sarah Morgan

Starfield Sarah Morgan serves as the acting Chair of the Constellation, making her the de facto leader of one of the best exploration teams in the Settled Systems. Before assuming a leadership position, Sarah was a soldier and adventurer, so you can be certain that she’ll serve you well as a companion out in the field. You can also pursue this capable commander and strike up a Starfield romance – but don’t expect her to fall for you just like that.

Adoring Fan

The Adoring Fan reprises his role from Oblivion to bring us his trademark nagging sycophancy – in space. His primary goal in life is to follow you around and shower you with relentless praise, though he can also be of use out in the wilderness of distant Starfield planets thanks to his skills in scavenging and carrying heavy burdens. The Adoring Fan is also the first confirmed crew member that can be unlocked by choosing a specific Starfield trait, ensuring that your fate to meet him is written in the stars.

Heller

As an Argos Extractors employee, Starfield Heller certainly knows his way around Starfield materials – which makes him the perfect crew member to maintain a Starfield outpost while you go shooting off across the Settled Systems. We find him stranded on a distant planet, and he’s looking to hitch a ride off this rock. It might seem a bit unfair to immediately put him to work after you rescue him, but judging by his skills, he’ll be more than happy under your employ.

VASCO

Starfield VASCO is an “expeditionary robot”, an early model originally built by the Lunar Robotics Corporation before being refurbished to meet the needs of the Constellation. While he does have defensive capabilities, his primary role is that of a support crew member, so he proves particularly useful during long expeditions on material-rich planets.

What are Starfield companions?

Starfield companions are unique NPCs that you can recruit and take with you on your journey across the Settled Systems. They can remain on your ship as part of your crew, or stick close to your side. You can socialize with them to become platonic friends and, in some cases, even romantic partners. Starfield companions that join you on your adventure can be set to follow you around, look after your outposts, or man your ship. Each one has a predetermined set of Starfield skills, so you can easily differentiate their strengths and decide who to bring along with you in your ‘away team’. These skills can’t be leveled up any further than their current rank, but any that you share with them will stack with your own.

We’ve also got a list of the Starfield religions that they might prescribe to, so you can ensure that their beliefs don’t clash with your own.
